Piura is a department known for its fertile cotton fields, for being the birthplace of the tondero (a traditional dance), chicha (a corn beverage), and for also having a renowned gastronomy. It is located in the Chira River valley and borders the Sechura Desert, the most extensive and arid in all of Peru.

It was the first city founded by the Spanish in South America in 1532. The city’s colonial heritage is evident in the narrowness of its old streets and the preservation of mansions and houses belonging to the first settlers. On the historic Lima Street stands the Church of San Francisco, the place where the city’s independence was proclaimed on January 4, 1821, a moment that marked a milestone for the beginning of Peru’s independence. Among its singular characteristics are the coastal rock formations of Los Órganos, whose shape resembles the pipes of ancient churches, and the Amotape hills that meet the sea at the picturesque point of Cabo Blanco.
