The department of San Martín is located in the middle Huallaga River valley, serving as a link between the northern highlands (sierra) and the low jungle (selva). Its strategic location is characterized by a moderate tropical climate and fertile soils that allow for high agricultural productivity, with crops like coffee, rice, cotton, and fruit trees.

Tarapoto is the most relevant city, possessing a typical jungle infrastructure and known as the “City of Palms” (Ciudad de las Palmeras). It is located specifically in the valley formed by the Cumbaza and Shilcayo rivers. Its name comes from the “Taraputus” palm variety, which was previously abundant along the banks of the Suchiche lagoon. Within San Martín you can also find the city of Moyobamba, recognized for being the first city founded by the Spanish in the northern Peruvian jungle (1540).
