Yumbilla Waterfall is considered one of the tallest in the world, with a total height of 895 meters (2,936 feet) divided into four cascades. On this adventure tour, you’ll have the opportunity to trek through the Cuispes cloud forest to reach the base of its first cascade, which measures 230 meters (755 feet) in height.

This full-day excursion begins in Chachapoyas, heading towards the village of Cuispes. From there, you’ll travel to the Chasuta area to begin your hike through a cloud forest surrounded by bromeliads, orchids, and giant ferns (native flora). Along the way, you’ll also see two waterfalls called Cristal and Medio Cerro, in a habitat that is home to the Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru’s national bird, and the spatuletail hummingbird.

  • Location: Cuispes Village, San Francisco de Yeso District, Bongará Province, Amazonas Department, Peru.
  • Distance from Chachapoyas to Cuispes Village: Approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • Distance from Cuispes to Yumbilla Waterfall: 3 km.
  • Maximum altitude at Cuispes: 1,933 meters (6,341 feet).

Day 1Description of the activities

  • 8:00: Pick-up of passengers from the comfort of their accommodation to begin the tour towards the Cuispes Community.
  • 10:00: Arrival at the Cuispes community and transfer by vehicle to the area known as Chasuta.
  • 10:20: Start of the hike from Chasuta through the cloud forest vegetation, visiting the waterfalls, beginning with Cristal Waterfall, followed by Medio Cerro, and finally reaching Yumbilla Waterfall.
  • 13:20: Free time to enjoy a picnic lunch in the middle of the cloud forest, with views of the waterfalls.
  • 15:00: Hike back to the Chasuta area to board the vehicle to return to the community square.
  • 15:20: Traditional lunch in the Cuispes community.
  • 16:45: Return to the town of Chachapoyas.
  • 18:00: Approximate arrival in the city of Chachapoyas. End of our services.

The best time to visit is from May to November, during the dry season. The climate along the route to Yumbilla is warm and humid due to the protected forest, so we recommend bringing quick-drying clothing and protection against sudden rain.
