The city of Arequipa is nestled amidst fertile countryside at the foot of the Misti volcano and is the second most important city in Peru. It is known as the White City because of the color of the sillar (volcanic stone used in the construction of almost all of its imposing churches and mansions).
Founded in 1540, this destination boasts one of the most beautiful main squares in Peru, making it a cornerstone of colonial architecture. The city’s historic center is also adorned with Baroque, Neoclassical, and Renaissance elements, characteristics that have led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Santa Catalina Monastery (since 1970), La Compañía Church (home of the Jesuits during the 17th century), San Francisco Church (which also has a famous artisan market called Fundó El Hierro), Museum of Andean Sanitary Ware (inside is the exhibit of Monia Juanita, an Inca maiden found in 1995), Colca Canyon (from where you can appreciate the flight of the Condor) and Cotahuasi, Toro Muerto Petroglyphs, Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve (which offers a salt flat and a beautiful mirror effect during the rainy months), Chivay (gateway to several tourist routes such as the one to the Colca Canyon).
