Huancaya is the main jewel of the Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserve, a protected territory located in the central Andean mountain range that stands out for its impressive emerald-colored lagoons and stepped waterfalls of crystal-clear water.

If you love nature trekking, landscape photography, and are looking to explore new outdoor routes, this activity is perfect for you. You’ll hike alongside rivers, cross colonial bridges, and navigate through a natural environment.

  • Location: Central Andes, Yauyos Province, Lima Department.
  • Distance from Lima to Huancaya: Approximately 7 to 8 hours via the southern route (Cañete - Lunahuaná).
  • Maximum altitude in Huancaya: 3,554 meters (11,660 feet).
  • IMPORTANT: Participants must be able to handle altitude sickness (soroche). Experience trekking at altitudes above 3,554 meters (11,660 feet) is required, as well as good physical condition for the hike.
  • Climate: Cold and dry mountain climate. Average temperatures between 3°C and 17°C.
  • Best time of year: April to October (dry season).

DAY 1LIMA - HUANCAYA

  • 22:00: Pick-up of passengers in San Borja and departure for Huancaya via the Pan-American Highway South.

DAY 2VITIS VILLAGE - HUANCAYA - LIMA

  • 06:00: Arrival at Piquecocha Lake (Vitis Village) for group acclimatization and a panoramic photo stop at the main pier.
  • 06:30: Arrival in Huancaya Village, breakfast (not included) at a local restaurant, and a safety briefing by the guide.
  • 07:30: Start of the trek through the traditional streets of Huancaya Village. During the walk, you can photograph the river from the Old Calicanto Stone Bridge and continue the hike towards the Cabracancha Waterfalls to cross its suspension bridge.
  • 09:30: Ascent to the Huallhua Viewpoint to admire the panoramic view of the reserve’s stepped lagoons.
  • 10:30: Descent to Huallhua Lake for a boat ride (optional – not included), where you will have the opportunity to observe native birds and the area’s vegetation.
  • 11:30: Continuation of the hike to the beautiful Las Rosas Waterfall and the Blue Lake.
  • 13:30: Return to the town of Huancaya by transport to enjoy lunch (not included) with a choice of typical dishes featuring fresh river trout.
