Did you know that the White City of Arequipa is recognized by that name for its impressive mansions, temples and monuments made of ashlar? If so, this albino rock of volcanic origin is the main raw material for the construction of this beautiful city, which is in fact the second largest and most populated city in all of Peru.

Nowadays, it is possible to join the visit of this tourist circuit called Ruta del SILLAR, which runs through the interior of the Añashuayco quarries, located in the Cerro Colorado District, a place where we can appreciate the ancestral process of extracting blocks and various carvings made by the sculptors of this town.

The tour also includes a visit to Quebrada de Culebrillas, which is located 30 minutes away from Añashuayco. Upon arrival at this point, we will embark on a 20-minute hike within this small canyon where we will see Petroglyphs and appreciate the Apachetas (symbols of gratitude towards nature and also believed to attract good luck). After completing this tour, lasting approximately 4 hours, we will begin the return journey to the city of Arequipa.

Day 1Description of activities

(1) Departure: 09:00 / Return: 13:10

  • 08:50: Hotel pickup (please note this applies only if your hotel is near or close to Plaza de Armas in Arequipa).
  • 09:00: We will start our tour from the Historic Center of Arequipa heading towards the Quarries. Along the way, our professional guide will provide details about constructions made from volcanic rock (Sillar).
  • 09:20: Our first stop will be at Mirador de Volcanes located in the district of Cayma, where we can appreciate the three most important volcanoes of Arequipa from a different angle: Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu.
  • 09:45: We will continue the tour towards the quarries, the place where the White City originated. We will enter the quarries to observe the immense cliffs worked by human hands.
  • 10:10: Next, we will have time to interact with the unique characters and learn about the ancestral technique of sillar extraction, which has been preserved from colonial times to the present day.
  • 11:00: We will return to our transportation to head to Quebrada Virgen de Culebrillas, where we will embark on a fascinating 20-minute hike. We will see the presence of Apachetas and have the opportunity to build our own.
  • 12:10: After the hike, we will board our transportation to return to the city of Arequipa.
  • 13:10: Approximate arrival in the city of Arequipa.

What is the best time to do the Ruta del Sillar activity?

It can be done without problem, throughout the year. The climate in the Cerro Colorado district, where the tour takes place, is dry during the months of August, so it is likely to witness strong wind currents.

Generally, during the months of April to December the weather is quite hot and dry. Good season to be able to carry out the activity, and don’t be surprised by rain.
