Explore the Fortress of Kuélap, a gigantic fortified citadel dating back to the 6th century AD, built at an altitude of 3,000 meters (9,842 feet) by the Chachapoyas (a pre-Inca culture). Located in the heart of the Amazonas department, it combines pre-Hispanic engineering with incredible views of the valley, which you’ll traverse aboard a modern cable car system that travels quickly through the canyons and offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Amazonian landscape.

To detail

Our full-day tour begins with a transfer from the comfort of your accommodations to the community of Nuevo Tingo, the starting point for boarding the cable car that will take you directly to the La Malca station. You will then visit the interpretation center to learn about the secrets and sacred importance of the Chachapoyas culture before beginning your tour.

Afterward, you will embark on a 30-minute uphill hike surrounded by nature to reach the base of the gigantic fortress. After exploring the interior of the archaeological complex with your guide and marveling at its walls and replicas of its famous circular dwellings, you will return by cable car to the community of Nuevo Tingo to enjoy a delicious local lunch.

Finally, you will make a final stop at a natural viewpoint to appreciate the Macro archaeological complex, located on the other side of the mountain, before concluding your tour with the return journey, arriving back in the city of Chachapoyas at approximately 17:30.

Day 1Description of the activities

9:15: Passenger pick-up begins from the comfort of their accommodations, heading south of Chachapoyas.
10:30: Arrival at the community of Nuevo Tingo. Brief stop to order lunch at the local restaurant.
11:00: Ascent to Peru’s first cable car system to begin the scenic journey to the La Malca checkpoint.
11:45: Arrival at La Malca for a visit to the interpretation center and explanation of the history of the Chachapoyas culture before entering the site.
12:00: Start of the hike surrounded by native vegetation to the archaeological complex.
12:30: Entrance to the Kuélap Fortress for a guided tour of its interior, ending with a view of the replica of a Chachapoya circular house.
13:45: Start of the return hike to the La Malca checkpoint to board the cable cars back.
1500: Arrival in the community of Nuevo Tingo and enjoy lunch.
16:00: Transfer to the Utcubamba Valley with a stop at the natural viewpoint to admire the Macro archaeological site.
16:30: Start of the return trip, arriving in the city of Chachapoyas at approximately 17:30. End of our services.

What is the best time to travel to Chachapoyas?

The best time to travel to Chachapoyas is from June to November, due to the lack of rain. The weather is usually cool to mild, so it’s always best to bring a warm jacket to avoid catching a cold.

What important details should I know about this Full Day tour?

At least 15 days before your scheduled travel date and/or subject to availability. If you are from a neighboring country or anywhere else in the world, we recommend booking at least 20 days in advance, or 1 month if your arrival date falls during peak season in Chachapoyas.
