What will you discover in this Package?
This 5-day, 4-night package begins on the first day, giving you the freedom to choose how to connect with the highlands according to your own travel style. You can choose between a City Tour where you’ll discover Puno’s colonial secrets, ascend to the Puma Uta viewpoint and marvel at the view of the bay, explore the Cathedral and the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Candelaria in Pino Park, and visit the Carlos Dreyer Museum to admire the Sillustani Treasure (Archaeological Funeral Complex), an invaluable collection of gold pieces belonging to the Colla culture, an ancient pre-Inca civilization. Or, if you prefer, you can explore Andean mysticism by visiting the Sillustani funerary complex and the village of Atuncolla, where you’ll enter an authentic family home to interact with camelids, sample local cheeses with native potatoes, see the traditional Pukara Bulls, and walk among gigantic pre-Hispanic towers overlooking Lake Umayo and Hatun Island.
The second day begins with a visit to Lake Titicaca (considered the highest navigable lake in the world). You’ll depart from the port of Puno in comfortable boats while enjoying landscapes filled with wild birds and totora reeds (a native aquatic plant). Your first stop will be the floating islands of the Uros, where you’ll learn how this ancestral people weave totora reeds to construct their own floating worlds and discover their daily hunting and fishing customs. Afterward, you’ll continue your journey to Amantaní Island, where a warm Quechua family will open the doors of their traditional home to share their customs. In the afternoon, you’ll hike to the summits of the Pachatata or Pachamama temples to witness the ritual offering to Mother Earth under a magical sunset, ending the day with a home-cooked dinner and a lively local celebration filled with traditional music and dances, wearing the area’s traditional clothing (optional).
Your third day will begin with the fresh air of the lake and breakfast prepared by your hosts before traveling by boat to Taquile Island, a destination famous for its textile art, protected by UNESCO. Once on the island, you’ll ascend to the main square with your guide to visit the Santiago Artisan Association, where you’ll see the intricate details of their handwoven garments (remember to bring cash if you wish to purchase a souvenir). Afterward, you’ll participate in a festive dance with the community members and enjoy a typical lunch overlooking the vastness of the lake. Finally, you will descend a stone path with approximately 500 steps, testing your physical endurance. This path will eventually lead you to the dock to board the boat back to Puno.
On the fourth day, you will explore the history and mysteries of the southern highlands towards the Inka Qamaña archaeological site, known as the “Inca Resting Place,” where you will observe meticulously crafted, finely carved stone structures. Then, you will travel to Juli, known as the “Rome of America.” Here, you will have the opportunity to visit religious temples such as San Juan de Letrán or Santa Cruz de Jerusalén, and admire paintings from the Cusco School before having free time for lunch (not included) in its colonial plazas. The route continues to the mystical Aramu Muru portal, where you will stand before the “Gate of the Gods,” carved into a reddish mountain, and also walk through its Stone Forest. Finally, you’ll visit the village of Chucuito and enter Inka Uyo to see its famous stone sculptures dedicated to fertility, returning to the city of Puno in the afternoon. Discover the mysteries that the high plateau has in store for you.
