On day 1, we will arrive by boat along the Lower Madre de Dios River (known as the Serpentine River) to our Lodge, where we will receive a warm welcome with a delicious refreshing drink made with local ingredients. We will then go to Cocha Caimán, a small lagoon where we will have the opportunity to observe the black and white caiman.
On day 2, the tour to Lake Sandoval begins early, as before seeing it, we must begin a hike from its entrance gate through the lush forest vegetation. Once we reach the Sandoval Lake channel, we will take a rowboat to enter the majestic lake for a dreamy tour where we will observe a variety of species, from birds such as parrots and macaws to reptiles such as caimans, and, if we are lucky, we will even spot giant otters in their natural habitat. We will continue with a visit to Monkey Island, where we will find an enormous variety of lush flora and numerous primates, such as the macaw and the capuchin monkey. You’ll have a unique experience in this beautiful city, a few days you’ll always remember.
*The itinerary may vary depending on the season.
Definitely one of the most important things to do before traveling to Puerto Maldonado for the first time is to check the weather forecast for your stay. Puerto Maldonado can be extremely hot, and can also be very rainy during the day, so you should be prepared for all kinds of changes.
The second thing is definitely to try to get vaccinated against yellow fever. Although vaccination against yellow fever is not officially required for Peru, the disease is known to be present in the rainforest, and the vaccine is recommended for travelers to all destinations located in the tropical forests of South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Those looking to get vaccinated before traveling should keep in mind that the vaccination must be obtained at least ten days before visiting the rainforest. Those who have already been vaccinated should remember that they will require a booster vaccination every ten years.
